Study analyzed injuries in children related Basketball

First Aid in the United States reported more than 4 million basketball injuries between 1997 and 2007 Pediatrics (375 350 per year). In The wounds of the basketball relative to children of school age, 1997-2007, published in the October issue of Pediatrics Press 2010 (published online 13 September), the researchers examined National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (Neiss) data hospital rooms more than 100 emergency.The authors of the study, the number of accidents related to the continuing high level basketball and the increase in traumatic brain injury remains a cause for concern and more research is needed to understand the factors behind this increase.

The most commonly reported injuries were of a strain or distortion of the lower limbs (30.3 %), especially at the ankle (23.8 %). Although injuries have declined during the period of 11 years, the number of basketball-related traumatic brain injuries jumped 70 %. The boys were more likely to suffer sprains or tears, the girls were more likely to suffer traumatic brain injuries and knee injuries.

Older children, aged 15 to 19 years were more likely to suffer injuries of the lower limbs, and young children, aged 5 to 10, were more likely to experience upper extremity injuries, traumatic brain injury, the ‘fractures or dislocations.
